The Fort Stewart water pollution control plant has reported a sewage release.

The release occurred around 11 a.m. Saturday. According to the City of Hinesville, plant operators responded, and all operational equipment was in service.

It was determined that due to an excess of 1.59 inches of rainfall in a short period, flow exceeded capacity and a sewer release occurred. The total amount released was estimated at 1,500 gallons.

Due to the rainfall, the released wastewater may have reached state waters, resulting in a spill.
