Early voting opens in two cities, county
vote

Early voting continues across the county and in Midway and Flemington.

Voters across Liberty County have four items on the ballot — two races for the state’s Public Service Commission and referendums on the FLOST (floating local option sales tax) and the TSPLOST (transportation special purpose local option sales tax).

The FLOST, if passed, would enact a 1% sales tax, with the proceeds going toward reducing the county millage rate. TSPLOST, if approved, would put into place an additional 1% sales tax, with the proceeds going toward road, transportation and drainage improvements across the county.

Voters in Midway are choosing a new mayor and also selecting four city council members. Current council members Stanley Brown and Malcolm Williams are running for mayor, along with Kenneth Williams.

Current mayor Levern Clancy Jr. is seeking a city council seat. Incumbents Clemontine F. Washington and Henry O. Stevens Jr. are running to retain their seats. Also running for city council seats are Rudolph “Rudy” Campen, Vernon Donovan, Annie L. Foskey, Melice Gerace, Janet Bryant Jones, Jamal McIver, Terrie S. Sherrod and Rhonda Thomas.

Incumbent Paul Hawkins is running to retain his seat as Flemington mayor and is challenged by Timothy Byler. All six Flemington City Council seats are up for election and four incumbents are running — Rene’ Ryon Harwell, Larry Logan, Hasit Patel and Leigh Smiley. Paul Martin and Manish “Mike” Patel also are running as David Edwards and Gail Evans declined to seek re-election.

There have been 1,193 ballots cast, either in person or dropped off, since early voting began October 14. Early voting runs through October 31 and there will be early voting held this Saturday. Advanced voting can be done at either the Liberty County voter registration office multipurpose room in the historic courthouse, 100 Main Street, or at in the John D. McIver auditorium at the Liberty County Community Complex at 9797 East Oglethorpe Highway in Midway.

Election day voting for the Midway municipal elections will be conducted at the east end complex from 7 a.m.–7 p.m.

Polls at precincts for county voting will be open November 4 from 7 a.m.– 7 p.m.

For county voting, two voting precincts have been relocated. The 4th voting precinct will be at the Liberty College and Career Academy and the 13th voting precinct will be at the Iglesia de Dios es el Poder (Church of God is the Power Church) at 2387 East Oglethorpe Highway, where Flemington voting also will be held.
