The father of a 9-year-old motorcyclist injured in an accident was arrested Thursday morning and charged with cruelty to a child, allowing a vehicle to be operated with no valid insurance, and allowing an unlicensed person to operate the vehicle.

According to Hinesville Police Department Lt. Scott Hensler, a warrant was issued for Adam Ballard, who surrendered himself to authorities. Ballard appeared before a magistrate and was given a $1,200 cash bond or $2,400 property bond.

Allegedly, Ballard allowed his 9-year-old son to operate a motorcycle Sunday afternoon. While operating the motorcycle, he sideswiped a vehicle traveling in front of him. The youngster was transported by medical helicopter to Memorial Health University Center in Savannah and treated for a wrist injury and cuts and bruises.
