Liberty County Sheriff ’s deputies will have another tool at their disposal in keeping the community safe.
Thanks to a grant from the Spirit of Blue Foundation, the sheriff ’s office is receiving 97 Nano 3 trauma kits and 97 tourniquets. The total value of the donation is more than $24,754.
“Today is a special day for us,” Sheriff Will Bowman said of receiving the kits.
The tourniquets are provided by North American Rescue and the trauma kits are furnished by Blue Force Gear. The trauma kits are compact enough to be carried by deputies on their belts and include combat gauze, pressure dressings and sterile gloves. There is also a pocket for Narcan, but the Narcan itself — since it has a shelf life — is not part of the kit.
“It can go right on the deputy’s uniform, so it is always available to them,” said Ryan Smith, executive director of the Spirit of Blue Foundation. “This is a kind of everybody wins with this product.”
The use of the trauma kits, said Ashley Burnsed, CEO of Pooler-based Blue Force Gear, means getting medical gear to those who are most likely to be the first on the scene, calling it a “passion project” for his company.
“It is very near and dear to our heart,” he said.
Burnsed also said North American Rescue makes the best of the best when it comes to tourniquets.
“Tourniquets are life-saving items,” he said. “We have no doubt that lives will be saved. This will make a difference and Liberty County is leading in this effort.”
Sheriff Bowman thanked LCSO grant writer Shaquille Russell in procuring the funding from the Spirit of Blue Foundation.
“Shaquille is always looking out for the citizens of Liberty County in our efforts to improve our efficiency in case our officers run into something different on the road,” Bowman said.
Since 2011, the Spirit of Blue Foundation has donated more than $2 million in equipment to law enforcement agencies.
