What is believed to be one of the oldest structures in Hinesville went up in flames Tuesday afternoon.

Hinesville Fire Department dispatched units from both of its stations, and fire fighters worked to salvage much of the wooden building on Rebecca Street, adjacent to the Hinesville branch of the Live Oak Public Library.

Fire fighters from the HFD’s station 1 and station 2 were dispatched at 1:19 p.m., and 10 HFD fire fighters worked to keep the blaze under control.

Fire Chief Robert Kitchings lavished praise upon his fire fighters, who arrived at a scene with the house engulfed in flames.

“The fact that the structure is still standing after the amount of fire our crews encountered is a testament to the training and hard work our members put in every day to ensure the safety of our citizens,” Chief Kitchings said.

The two-story home was not believed to be occupied at the time, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
