The Long County Health Department is teaming up with the South Georgia Health System for a mobile mammogram event in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The SGHS mobile mammogram unit will be at the IGA parking lot on Highway 84 in Ludowici from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21.

Women who are at least 40 years of age without insurance can receive a screening mammogram at no cost as part of the health department’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP). Women aged 40 and older with health insurance and a mammogram order can also be screened. Appointments are not needed, and walk-ins are welcome.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, and 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. If breast cancer is found early, when it is small and has not spread, more treatment options are often available with a better outcome.

Regular mammograms are low-dose x-rays of the breast that can help find cancer at an early stage, sometimes years earlier than physical symptoms would appear. It is recommended that women with an average breast cancer risk begin regular mammogram screenings at age 40.

For more information about this event, call the Long County Health Department at 912-545-2107. For information about other breast cancer screening events happening around the Coastal Health District this October, visit coastalhealthdistirct.org/breastcancer.
