MIDWAY – Midway’s fire department could be back on the road soon.

Mayor pro tem Dr. Clemontine Washington said the department got an “excellent evaluation” from Wayne Feller, the Georgia Fire Standards Training Council’s safety and compliance specialist for southeast Georgia, and the GFSTC will hold a special called meeting today on Midway’s department.

“We our hopeful our suspension will be lifted so that we can run calls,” Washington said.

The city also hired a full-time fire fighter and a part-time fire fighter at city council’s special called meeting Monday.

Earlier this year, the GFSTC voted to suspend the city’s certification. Doing so means the city’s department cannot answer fire calls within its coverage area. County commissioners agreed, in a split vote, last month to extend a deal to cover calls in Midway by 30 days.

The city approved a contract with RL Construction to conduct rehabilitation on the existing Midway fire station. The contract, at nearly $357,000, also will make the doors to the station larger for equipment and vehicles. That work is expected to start in the middle of August.
