MIDWAY — Midway City Council got its first look at plans to rehabilitate its fire station.

Keith Causeway of Trent Long Engineering laid out what the firm has in mind to bring the station back to operation. One of the primary goals is to get bigger doors because one of the two current trucks is too big for the station’s current doors.

At least one of the bays, Causeway said, has to be 13 feet in height. Plans call for two bays to be 13 feet tall by 12 feet wide. A third bay can be 12 feet by 12 feet.

“Fire trucks are getting bigger,” he said.

Sleeping quarters also must be added, and the kitchen and bathrooms have to be updated, Causeway said. The refurbished building also will have a dayroom and a utility room. The space that has been a training room will become the dayroom.

Currently, the fire department offices are in the old city hall and police department adjacent to the fire station. Once finished, the station will have a desk in the dayroom for the chief.

Causeway cautioned that the firm is in planning right now. How long the project will take isn’t known, as they have not asked for requests for proposals and put the work out to bid.

Fire Chief Craig Reynolds also updated council members on the efforts to stand up the department.

“April has been a busy month,” he said.

The department has two other full-time fire fighters and Reynolds said they have had applications from three people to become fire fighters.

“We are asking folks to come in and see what we’re about and join our team,” the chief said.

Chief Reynolds also has created a training program for the department.

“We want to make sure our firefighters have the best training possible,” he said.

Council members praised Reynolds for his work in a short amount of time.

“You’re doing a great job,” Council member Stanley Brown said.
