Midway planning its 100th birthday bash

MIDWAY — The City of Midway’s plans for its centennial are coming together.

The city is planning to hold its 100th birthday Saturday, Aug. 9, and will have events leading up to the date. The city will be distributing gift bags to those who come to the first event, a tree planting that will take place Monday, Aug. 4, at 9 a.m.

The city also will be placing a time capsule on city hall grounds Friday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m.

The centennial celebration itself will take placeAug.9from11a.m.– 3 p.m., with a variety of games and bounce houses for the kids, Mayor pro tem Clemontine Washington said.

“Several vendors have called to set up booths,” she said.

Also on tap for the city is a yearly back-to- school giveaway, the seventh annual “We Love Our Kids” event sponsored by Gifted Creations. The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, beginning at 8 a.m. Among the offerings will be free haircuts and braids, school supplies, uniforms, shoes, groceries, personal hygiene products, food, games and mental counselors and fitness coaches.
