FORT STEWART – A military magistrate ordered the pretrial confinement for a soldier accused in a mass shooting to continue.
Maj. Nicole Ulrich said Sgt. Quornelius Radford’s confinement should remain in place following a hearing Tuesday on Fort Stewart. Radford is accused of shooting and wounding five fellow soldiers in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area last week.
Radford, who appeared in the Staff Judge Advocate courtroom in his ACU, or Army Combat Uniform, wore a ballistic vest and had his feet chained. He chose to be represented by Army defense attorneys.
Radford faces six specifications of attempted murder and two three-specification counts of aggravated assault of offenses under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, among other charges. Radford chose not to make a statement to the magistrate during the proceeding.
Victims of the shooting, including one who remains in the hospital and spoke by telephone, all agreed that Radford needed to remain in confinement.
“I do hope he gets the help he needs, whatever that is,” said the soldier who remains hospitalized.
The Army has not released the names of the victims from last week’s shooting.
“I think he’s a danger to himself. I think he’s a danger to others,” said another victim.
“I hold no hatred in my heart,” another victim said. “I refuse to let resentment or anger control me. That being said, I believe he remains a danger to himself and to others.”
Attorneys for the Army also said Radford told Criminal Investigation Division agents in interviews conducted after the shootings that he was targeting unit leadership. They also said he poses a flight risk and he kept a driving under the influence arrest in May from his leaders.
