Hinesville police officers had a good run with finding a stolen vehicle early Saturday morning.
At approximately 3 a.m., officers from the Hinesville Police Department’s D watch were dispatched to the Wedgewood Way area in reference to suspicious individuals reportedly attempting to break into vehicles.
While patrolling the area, an officer saw a black vehicle parked at an abandoned house. Upon lighting it up with the patrol vehicle’s alley light, the officer saw several individuals inside, all dressed in dark clothing and ski masks.
Before making contact, the officer called for backup. As the vehicle began to drive off, officers initiated a traffic stop. All three suspects got out of the car and ran. Officers quickly apprehended two of them. The parents of the third suspect later brought that individual to the police department.
The stolen vehicle was returned to its rightful owner. The investigation remains active — and so do the officers’ running shoes.
D watch officers were busy Friday night on Memorial Drive. At 11:24 p.m., officers responded after an alarm was triggered. When they arrived on scene, they discovered a business’ window had been broken, according to HPD reports.
Officers were dispatched to another business nearby after an alarm was tripped. Officers then began getting reports of a man breaking windows at businesses at a General Screven Way shopping plaza.
An officer found the suspect, and when the suspect — later identified as Corey Johnson — ignored commands to stop, he was tasered.
Johnson later told officers, according to reports, “I’m a genius.” He is believed to have damaged the windows and doors of 10 local businesses. He was arrested for eight counts of criminal damage to property, as well as obstruction, and taken to the Liberty County Jail. He has been denied bond.
