School bus drivers in Liberty County will get some help in finding their way around the county to pick up students.
School board members are considering a transportation navigation system, Transfinder, that provides turn-by- turn navigation and vocal directions. “This will help drivers who are unfamiliar with a route,” operations director Arnold Jackson said.
Currently, substitute bus drivers use paper route sheets for directions for student pickup and drop-off. The transportation department has been using the system in a trial program for three months.
The plan calls for placing 65 of the systems on existing buses, and it will take 60 days to install, Jackson said.
The cost for the program is almost $135,000.
The school system ended with a 92% on-time delivery for last school year. There are now 83 drivers, a 7% increase over last year, and there are three drivers in training. There are 13 drivers in training as well.
Board chair Verdell Jones also encouraged parents to download and use the Stopfinder app, which shows where buses are and when children can be expected to be picked up and dropped off.
The first day of school is August 6.
