Liberty County commissioners may have found a new home for the elections and registration office — and it could be available in a few months.
A site study by Buckley and Associates found the current location of the health department could serve as locale for the elections office. The elections office, now housed in the Historic Liberty County Courthouse, is in need of more space.
“Suitability-wise, it should be good,” David Holton of Buckley and Associates told commissioners about the spot where the health department is now.
The proposed site also drew the backing of John McIver, who chairs the Board of Elections.
“I thought it was a great idea,” McIver said. “If David says it’s fine, I am totally in agreement.”
McIver said the elections board has been pushing county commissioners for a new office.
“And praise God this came open,” he said.
The health department’s new home on Highway 84 is under construction, and could be open as early as March 2026.
County commissioners also accepted a bid for furnishing the health department, awarding a contract of $386,000 to VIP. Seven proposals were submitted but only three made it to the round of bidding. The county’s budget for the health department furniture was $450,000.
Joey Brown, the former county administrator who is working with the county on a couple of building projects, said they are projecting to have the furniture installed in March.
“The project is going along very, very well,” he said. “It’s on schedule and under budget.”
Brown also said the construction of a new EMS administration building is coming along and with the space it will provide, the county could save as much as $100,000 a year in prescription drugs it can store in the new building.
