Woman caught in the middle of altercation has hand severed

A woman’s hand was severed following an altercation Sunday night at a home on Meadow Road.
Deputies from the Long County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the residence in regard to an assault shortly after 7:30 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies found a woman who had been attacked with a sword. The woman, according to a sheriff’s office release, was suffering from several major injuries, including a severed hand, a large cut in her upper arm and a deep wound to the back of her head.
Deputies, firefighters and EMTs stabilized the woman, who was transported by AirEvac to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. The woman is currently at Memorial in critical but stable condition.
A sheriff’s office investigation determined there was an altercation between parties and the woman was caught in the middle. Two men have been arrested in the incident. Hector Manuel Esparza-Reyes has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery, and Jorge Abdiel Esparza-Gress has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
Both men have a detainer placed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to the sheriff’s office ICE has determined both men have overstayed their visas. They are currently in the custody of the Long County Sheriff's Office.
