A woman was injured when a weapon discharged early Friday morning at the Parkers in Flemington.
According to Liberty County Sheriffs Office Detective Joshua Heath, deputies were dispatched to the business around 8:15 a.m. on reports of a shooting. When the deputies arrived, they discovered a woman wounded from a gunshot wound to the head.
According to the incident report, two contractors working on Fort Stewart discovered they had a rifle in the trunk of a vehicle. Due to the installation’s policy on firearms that are not registered, one of the men called his girlfriend to meet them at the Parkers to remove the weapon and take it home.
As the man was attempting to remove the rifle, it discharged into the trunk. The projectile went into the vehicle cabin, striking the woman in the right side of the head.
The woman was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah where she is currently in ICU.
Once the scene, was cleared an officer was attempting to remove the rifle when it discharged again striking a nearby unoccupied vehicle. It was discovered a cord located in the trunk had wrapped around the trigger mechanism, causing the weapon to discharge whenever it was picked up. The deputy is not facing charges since the scene was secured and he was in the process of recovering evidence.
The man was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment.
