Dear Editor,
To Representative Carter, Senator Ossoff, Senator Warnock: As duly elected Members of Congress representing the voters of Georgia, you took an oath of office. “… I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”
Some roles and duties of Members of Congress are: representation, legislation, and oversight/ investigation.
You introduced, sponsored, and passed legislation to rename the Hinesville VA Clinic to honor Georgia residents who were killed during combat operations in Vietnam.
Just as this legislation was passing the House and moving to the Senate, the Charleston VA, unhappy with the renaming, modified the exterior identifying signage, putting a South Carolina veteran’s name on the main entrance to this Georgia clinic.
This violated US Law 38 USC 531 and subsequent others. You each were notified but didn’t demand corrections as required by your oath and the law.
The Senate passed the legislation, and it became law.
Now Charleston faces a conundrum as the overwhelming majority of renaming legislation fails to become law. A signage modification must be made which reflects the now official name.
Answer: modify the smallest sign modified earlier, resulting in the clinic having three identifying exterior signs.
There are 1,380 medical facilities (40 in Georgia) in the VA inventory. The Hinesville Clinic is the only facility displaying more than one official name, much less three.
Still no actions by you that would correct this egregious violation that dishonors Georgia veterans and disrespects their Gold Star family members.
Our four veterans “gave their all” to honor their oath.
If you are going to hold the office, fulfill all the duties to which you swear an oath.
