Shirley Perry
United Way volunteer
The first time I read the stories submitted by families in need, I was struck by their honesty, resilience, and hope. These were real people, facing real challenges, and finding support through local nonprofit organizations. It reminded me why volunteering matters. Every form, every story, every conversation represented a life touched and a community strengthened. It was humbling to know that even in a small way, I could be part of that process.
Each year, United Way of the Coastal Empire raises money for the Community Fund, and the Community Fund is how United Way funds programs across more than 50 nonprofit agencies that provide vital services to our community.
United Way’s Community Investment process allows community members to play a vital role in investing Community Fund dollars back into the community. Trained by United Way staff, they review funding requests, visit local agencies, analyze program outcomes, and make funding recommendations.
I am Shirley R. Perry, a retired educator and former automobile F & I manager, and a proud resident of Liberty County. For the past five years, I have served as a United Way Community Investment volunteer. In this role, I have discovered just how many nonprofit agencies serve our community, each addressing unique needs and creating meaningful impact. From food security and education support to health and housing assistance, these organizations provide lifelines for residents across Liberty County and beyond.
I have always had a heart for helping the less fortunate, and this role gave me another opportunity to contribute. The moments that stand out most are reading the stories of individuals and families who have been positively impacted. Their experiences are moving, and they remind me why community support is so vital. I also appreciate the structured process, reading applications, participating in site visits, and hearing nonprofits share their missions in person, which ensures consistency, fairness, and transparency. The United Way staff makes the experience seamless, organized, and rewarding.
Volunteering for United Way’s Community Investment process is a unique way to give back while learning about the many ways our community cares for its own. I encourage others to consider participating. By lending your time and attention, you help support organizations that provide essential services and contribute to building a stronger community for all.
United Way’s Community Investment volunteer commitment typically entails four hours per week of volunteer time from February through April.
