The Beach Bulldogs cooled off one of the Coastal Empire’s hottest teams Friday night.
Jayvion Williams threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Bulldogs ended Liberty County’s five-game winning streak with an 18-7 victory at Donell Woods Stadium/Kirk Warner Field.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 7-2 on the season and 6-2 in Region 3-AAA. Beach improved to 5-3 overall and 5-3 in the region.
Beach held Liberty to 102 yards rushing for the game and limited the Panthers to 9 total yards and just one first down in the fourth quarter. The Panthers had the ball for just 2:10 in the final quarter.
Liberty scored first, as Jaeir Roberts powered in from 3 yards out with 16.5 seconds left in the first quarter. His score capped a nine-play, 32-yard drive that followed Nykiem Ezell’s interception.
The Bulldogs answered behind Williams and running back Jordan Newton. Newton jump-started the drive with a 37-yard gallop, and Williams picked up 29 on a quarterback draw. That led to Williams floating a 4-yard TD pass to Willie Mayes just over the fingertips of Liberty County’s Rashaud Woods with 8:06 remaining in the first half.
A Panthers fumble led to Beach’s second score, as Williams avoided the Panthers pass rush and hit Joe Thomas at the goal line with 6.5 seconds to go in the half, giving Beach a 12-7 lead. The scoring drive, which included a third-down conversion and another on fourth down, went 45 yards in 10 plays.
Liberty got to the Bulldogs 25 on the first drive of the second half, but stalled there and the Panthers never mounted another serious scoring threat.
Yet the Panthers remained down just five points until the 8:23 mark of the fourth quarter, as Williams scored on a 9-yard scramble, capping a 13-play, 76-yard drive that ate up 5:34 off the clock.
Newton ran for 152 yards on 30 attempts, and Williams added 97 yards on 12 carries. The Bulldogs rolled up 278 yards rushing on 47 carries as a team, while Liberty was held to 139 yards of total offense.
The Panthers end the regular season at Calvary Day.
