The Long County Blue Tide wrestling teams wrapped up their duals season a little over a week ago and shifted their focus to traditionals. Over the weekend, the teams had 14 wrestlers qualify for the state tournament.
On Friday, January 31, the girls team traveled to Perry to compete in the area traditional tournament at Houston County High School. The team performed well and had three wrestlers automatically qualify for the state preliminaries and four others named alternates.
Tymiah Powell swept through the heavyweight class to place first, Sala Tiapula-Savea placed third in the 190-pound class and Kaiden Boshers placed fourth in the 130 pound class.
Aaralyn Ruise, Haniyah Coleman, Janiya Williams and Maddison Chambers all placed sixth in their respective weight classes to qualify as alternates.
On Saturday, February 1, the boys team traveled to Savannah to compete in the region traditionals at Windsor Forest High School. They dominated throughout the bracket as 11 placed in the top four and one other qualified as an alternate.
Placing first in their weight classes were Zion Merrill (106), King Council (126), Andre Mills (132), TJayden Vaughn (144), and Mareon Montgomery (190).
Casey Dean (120), Joseph Williams (138) and Jago Wilson (157) placed second. Colton Young (150) and Aidan Sollosi (175) placed third and Raheem Williams (166) placed fourth. Ethan Miller (230) was the lone alternate qualifier.
The Blue Tide finished the day with 230 team points and placed first overall in the region as well, bringing home another region championship.
The girls will travel back to Houston County High School next Friday, February 7 and the boys will go to Chestatee High School in Gainesville on Saturday, February 8. Both of these tournaments will be the state preliminary rounds and the top four girls in each weight class and top eight boys in each class will advance to the state finals round in Macon February 13-14.
