The Long County Lady Blue Tide flag football team is looking to defend their region championship from the 2024 season and, so far, this year has gotten off to a good start.

The team had their home opener on Thursday, October 30 as they hosted the Brunswick Pirates and Windsor Forest Knights, blanking the Pirates 22-0 and posting a 25-0 shutout of Windsor Forest.

The Tide are now 4-0 and have not allowed a point so far this season.

It was all defense in the first game for the Lady Tide, but not before their first drive of the game produced a touchdown.

Quarterback Mallory Skipper hit running back Maliah Canete on a pass over the middle for the touchdown and six-point lead at the halfway point of the first quarter.

Neither team hit the endzone again in the first half, but the Tide got close twice.

Hollan Clark came up with an interception and returned the ball down to the Pirates three. However, a dropped snap on third and goal pushed the Tide back to the 10 on fourth down.

The Tide got down to the 1 on the play, but turned it over on downs as the Pirates took over deep in their own territory.

Ta’maira Mallard came up big for the defense as she pulled a flag in the endzone for a safety to give the Tide an 8-0 lead early in the second quarter.

After Skipper hit her twin sister Alyssa on a 27-yard gain to the Pirate 30, the Tide looked to be in business again. Skipper hit Hollie Filkins over the middle and she pitched it back to Canete, who went 25 yards to set up first and goal at the 5.

However, the Tide turned it over on downs at the 1 as the Pirates took over with less than two minutes left in the half.

Mallard again came up big for the Tide as she recorded another safety as they led 10-0. Skipper hit Jersi Lester for a 24-yard completion down to the 28, but Lester ended up throwing an interception late in the half on an attempted trick play.

After a forcing a three-and-out on Brunswick’s first series of the second half, Skipper hit Macey Higgason on a 23-yard pickup to the 10. Canete finished off the drive with her second touchdown of the game as the Tide went up 16-0.

Higgason came up with a big play on the next drive as she pulled down an interception at their own 10. Two plays later, the Skippers connected for a wide open 60-yard bomb for the touchdown.

In the second game, the Tide defense went right back to work. Annlee Wells came up with a big play to intercept the Windsor Forest pass and return it all the way down to the 1.

Skipper hit Skipper for the touchdown and early 6-0 lead. On the next series, Skipper hit Lester for a 28-yard pickup to the Knights 14 to set up first and goal. Skipper once again found her twin sister from a yard out for the second score of the game as they went up 13-0 early in the second quarter.

Another three and out for the Knights gave the Tide the ball at the Knights 37. Lester picked up 14 on a run to the 23 before Canete gained 9 on the ground.

Skipper connected with her sister for a third time as they went up 19-0 and carried that lead into halftime.

The Knights opened the second half with the ball, but Higgason came up big again, intercepting a pass and returning it to midfield.

The defense forced another punt as they took over at the Knights 18 after the short punt. Skipper threw her fourth touchdown of the game as she hit Higgason from 11 yards out.

They will look to continue their success this week as they hosted Statesboro and First Preparatory on Wednesday, and travel to Richmond Hill on Thursday.
