The Long County Lady Blue Tide softball team has challenged themselves to open the 2025 season, playing all four of their early games against schools in higher classifications.
They finally got to play their home opener when they welcomed in Glynn Academy on Tuesday, falling 1-0 in eight innings in a game delayed an hour by lightning. Sophia Brewster, one of the several freshmen starting for the Lady Tide, took the mound and her defense retired the first 11 batters for the Lady Terrors.
Freshman Catherine Sikes walked to lead off the bottom of the first, but the Terrors proceeded to sit down the next 13 batters for the Tide.
TIn the bottom of the sixth, Sikes doubled down the left field line. She stole third with one out but was left stranded.
A single and stolen base set the Red Terrors in position to score in the top of the eighth inning before another single made it 1-0 for Glynn Academy. Two more singles put runners on first and third and with no outs, it looked like the Terrors were primed to blow the game open.
Brewster, however, had other plans. Brewster’s diving play on a bunt attempt led to a double play.
