Kohlmin Nelson’s last game as a Bradwell Institute Tiger was one of his best. Now, he’s parlayed his career into another shot at the collegiate level.
Nelson signed with Middle Georgia Prep, a one-year program based in Barnesville.
Nelson, a point guard, led the Tigers basketball team to a 21-7 mark this season and he scored a career-best 15 points in the season-ending loss to Rome in the Class AAAAA state tournament. He was named to the Region 3-AAAAA honorable mention list.
“Kohlmin came in as a spunky type guy,” Tigers coach Ty Randolph recalled. “He always wanted to practice with the varsity.”
With Nelson running the point, the Tigers were 43-14 over the last two seasons, including their first region championship in nearly 30 years. He averaged three assists a game as a senior.
“Kohlmin kind of steered the ship,” Randolph said. “He leaves as probably the winningest point guard we’ve had here. When you do that, that tells me how you got here today.”
Jesse Fleming also noted the work Nelson put in every day to improve his game, showing up not just one or two days a week but four or five or more to get extra sessions in.
“The thing for me as a coach is can he be coached?” Randolph added. “There were nights I coached him like he was going to be a first-round draft pick. He was going to find out what you need. He never made an excuse and he never ran away from the moment.”
