The Long County Middle School Blue Tide soccer teams traveled to Baxley on Wednesday, March 26 to play in the conference championship games. Both games came down to the wire with the girls taking a 2-1 win over Pierce County while the boys lost 2-1 on penalty kicks in overtime.
With the win, the girls took their third straight conference title.
Jasmine Bales’ goal in the fifth minute gave the Tide girls a 1-0 lead. Pierce got a goal early in the second half to tie the game at 1-1.
With under five minutes remaining, Azalea Turner found her way to the goal and pushed a shot past the keeper to put the Tide up 2-1 with 4:41 left in the game.
The Tide’s defense held as they went on to the 2-1 win to secure the conference championship.
With the win, the Lady Tide finished the season 8-2.
The boys went down to the wire with the Rams as the score was tied 0-0 at the half. The Rams struck first on a free kick in the second half. In the 37th minute, the Rams got a look on a free kick after a penalty. The shot was in and good to make the score 1-0 for the Rams.
The Tide answered in the 41st minute as Alan Lima scored on a shot off a corner throw in to tie the game 1-1.
That tie held to the end of regulation as the game went into overtime. The Rams scored twice on penalty kicks, the second of which Tide coaches called into question after the referee ruled the Tide keeper touched the ball with his hand outside his allowed box.
The Rams held on to win the conference championship as the Tide finished season 6-4.
