A week after designating him for assignment, the New York Mets have signed Richard Lovelady to a one-year contract.
The left-handed pitcher and Hinesville native agreed to a new deal with the Mets on June 29. He was brought up to the big club June 23 but designated for assignment two days later after making one appearance.
Originally a 10th-round draft pick by Kansas City in 2016 out of Kennesaw State, Lovelady made his major league debut in 2019.
Lovelady has appeared in four games this year, striking out six batters in 5 1/3 innings between the Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto designated him for assignment March 30 and he was sent outright to Class AAA Buffalo on April 3. He elected free agency on April 4 and four days later, the Minnesota Twins signed him and sent him to their AAA franchise in St. Paul (Minn.).
He was released by the Saints on June 18 and signed with the Mets five days later.
