The Long County Blue Tide basketball teams rolled past the Tattnall County Warriors in a next-county rivalry game with the girls pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 44-39 win and the boys never looking back from the opening tip in a 94-38 rout.
The girls were looking to get a big win over the Lady Warriors, something they hadn’t done since December 2022. It was a back and forth game for the entire contest.
The Warriors were out to a lead early in the game after hitting two 3-point shots in the first and led 10-8.
However, the Lady Tide took a lead after going on a 9-0 run to lead 25-18 midway through the second quarter, paced by sophomores Khloe Morris and Za’Leda Cullars.
The Warriors stormed back with an 8-0 run down the stretch and to take a 26-25 lead into the locker room.
Neither scored until Cullars hit a free throw with 4:48 remaining in the game. She sparked a 9-0 run to give the Tide a 44-35 lead with a minute left in the game and the Tide held on to get the upset win over the 10th-ranked Warriors.
The Lady Tide move to 2-0 on the season with the win, something that they haven’t done in over a decade. Morris led the Tide with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Cullars scored seven points and Zae Buckner added eight.
The boys took the court against the Warriors with both teams’ 2024-25 seasons having gone in very different directions. The Tide missed the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons while the Warriors advanced to the final four.
The Tide had the upper hand on the night as they were well in control from the start. They opened with a 7-0 run before the Warriors finally scored 3:15 into the game.
Kelvin Hayes made a big play for the Tide, hitting a 3 and then stealing an inbound pass for a layup for a 14-5 lead.
Zyi’air Holt hit a layup while being fouled. He missed the free throw but the Tide grabbed the offensive rebound and scored to make it 20-5 with under 2:00 in the quarter.
The Tide led 25-10 going into the second quarter, where the Tide hit their first three 3-point attempts. The first was Holt’s while the next two belonged to Ja’Mere Martin.
Jonathan Talbert electrified the Tide bench with a breakaway dunk as they extended their lead to 20.
The Tide led 48-20 at the half after going 5-of-8 from 3-point range, and Martin was 3-for-3.
Jy’son Mallard extended their lead with a three-point play while the Tide recorded six dunks in the quarter. Mallard and Holt also hit 3s in the quarter as they scored 30 points and led 78-31 going into the fourth quarter.
