ALBANY -- The Long County Blue Tide track team had a successful weekend at the AAA Track and Field State Championships at Hugh Mills Stadium. The team had competitors in six different events with senior France Smith leading the way by placing in three events.
Her run got started early Friday morning as she placed fifth in the girls high jump after finishing with a height of five feet.
Later in the day, she advanced to the finals round of the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday with a second-place finish. She ran a 15.16, just .04 out of the best overall time.
Storms rolled in Friday evening, forcing the rest of the day’s events to be postponed to Saturday morning. This also meant the 300-meter hurdles were just a single-round event.
Saturday, Smith brought home two more medals after placing second in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. She ran a time of 15.02, losing in a photo finish as her opponent, Marzani Sconyers of Fayette County, finished with a 15.01.
To quote head coach Henry Blair, “It was dang near a tie.”
Smith finished off her Blue Tide career with a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles to take home the bronze medal.
Smith and her teammates Deneiya Davis, Makinzie Moody, and Ta’mara Mallard just missed making the podium in the 4x100 meter relay with a ninth-place finish.
She will now move on to her collegiate career as she will sign to run for Emmanuel University in Franklin Springs.
