The Long County Blue Tide baseball team finished out the regular season with a dominant victory to fully secure their spot in the state playoffs. They took on the Groves Rebels in the Region 3-AAA crossover game on Thursday, April 17 and rolled to a 15-0 victory.
Peyton Pilon and Peyton Batt combined for a three-inning perfect game with six strikeouts.
The Tide put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Anthony Bramwell’s first inning single plated Nick Sizemore for a 2-0 lead, and Luke Poppell’s single and Jehmiel Pettis’ double turned that into a 4-0 lead. Pettis scored on a passed ball to cap the rally.
The struck again in the second. Creighton Rogers’ triple brought in Colton Keen, and Bramwell’s blooper to shallow left pushed the lead to 7-0. After a walk, Poppell delivered a two-run single to right.
Two more passed balls and a throwing error gave the Tide a 13-0 lead. Sizemore singled to bring home another run for the Tide as they led 14-0 going into the third.
Batt, who walked to start the third, came around on Braedon Chambless’ single center, giving the Tide a 15-0 advantage and a mercy-rule win.
The Tide moved to 15-10 to end the regular season and clench an eighth straight playoff berth.
The Tide await their playoff seeding as they look to secure a top 16 spot in the final power rankings. This would give them their first home playoff game since the 2001 season.
Long County will open the Class AAA playoffs at Whitewater with a doubleheader Friday, and a third game if necessary Saturday. The winner of that series will take on the winner of the Harlem-Mt. Zion, Jonesboro series. Harlem is the No.1 ranked team in Class AAA.
