The Long County Blue Tide football team clinched a playoff berth for a fifth season in a row on Friday night with a 49-7 win over the Islands Sharks on senior night.
The Tide got on the board first on their second possession, going 74 yards. Dylan Tyler got things rolling with a 48 yard run to the Sharks 24. Two plays later, Cortney Charles scored from 24 yards out as the Tide went up 7-0.
The Sharks converted a fourth down at the Tide 42 but on second down, Jay’Quan Johnson came up with an interception on a deep pass as the Tide took over at their own 17.
On a third and 7, Wesley Williams picked up 20 yards to set up the Tide with a fresh set of downs at the 50. On the next play, Tyler Gamble raced 50 yards for the score as the Tide led 14-0 late in the first.
A Sharks fake punt attempt failed and the Tide took over at the Islands 30-yard line.
Ethan Miller walked into the endzone from 2 yards out to make it 21-0 early in the second quarter.
After Gamble’s sack on a Sharks fourth down conversion try, Tyler found Williams on a 28-yard shot to make it 28-0 with 7:32 left in the half.
The Sharks got their lone score of the game on an 18-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 28-7.
On the opening possession of the second half, the Sharks drove to the Tide 10 before turning it over on downs.
From there, Williams picked up 20, TJ Grayson ran for 33 yards and Charles added a 22-yard to the Sharks 8. On first and goal, Grayson went around the left side to make the score 35-7.
In the fourth quarter, Jehmiel Pettis scored from 4 yards out to make it 42-7.
Markyl Allen added one more score late on a 61-yard run.
The Tide finish the year 7-3 for the second season in a row. They now await their playoff matchup. The first round game will be played on Friday, November 14.
