The Long County Blue Tide volleyball team’s home matches against Calvary Day and Beach on Thursday, August 21 were cut short due to a power outage at the school when a severe storm blew through Ludowici.
However, the Tide played their match against the Cavaliers. After the Cavaliers pulled away early in the first set, the Lady Tide seemed to have them on the ropes in the second set to force a third, but fell late in the set as they suffered their first region loss of the season.
The Lady Tide entered into Thursday’s contest sitting at a program-best record of 7-2 and coming off their first region win of the season, a 2-0 victory over Johnson on Tuesday.
It was a back-and-forth contest early on in the first set with Makailah Johnson tying the set early on a service ace. With the score tied 2-2, the Cavaliers went on a 13-1 run to build a 15-3 lead. This was enough to keep the Tide at bay as the Cavaliers won the first set 25-8.
The second set started as close as the first one did with an ace by Kerry Ann Carrillo sparking a run for the Tide that included aces by Aliana Morales and Sofia Caldelas.
With a 12-7 lead, it looked like the Lady Tide had a chance to force a third set against the Cavaliers. However, the Cavaliers went on a 7-1 run to regain the lead 14-13 and added two more points to lead 16-13.
The Lady Tide never got back within two points, even with another Caldelas ace, as they fell to the Cavaliers 25-20 to drop the set 2-0.
The Cavaliers easily dispatched the Bulldogs in the second match of the night, but signs of the storm cutting the night short were apparent. As the second set finished, power went out in the gym, prompting the Long County and Beach match to be canceled.
That match will be rescheduled as it is a region matchup and must be played. The Lady Tide are now 7-3 and 1-1 in region play.
