JEFFERSON - The Long County Blue Tide wrestling team competed in the AAA state duals on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17. The team ended up falling in the first round of the winner’s bracket before losing their first match in the consolation bracket.
On Friday, they took Oconee County in the first round and looked to take down the Warriors, but fell behind early in the match.
Sandejago Wilson and Elijah Williams each lead in their match by two points late in the third round before take downs led to them losing each decision by a point and giving the Warriors a 6-0 lead.
The Warriors dominated the next three matches with pins to go up 30-0. Roman Stewart-Evans gave the Tide their first points with a pin.
Oconee County had the victory well in hand before Jason Kidwell got a pinfall in the 144-pound class and Tjayden Vaughn got a decision victory on a last-second takedown.
The Warriors moved on to a 60-15 win, sending the Tide to the consolation bracket. On Saturday, they took on Mt. Zion, Jonesboro fell to the Bulldogs 55-23 to see their duals season come to an end.
The team will look to compete for a state title at the traditionals championship meet in February.
