The Jenkins Warriors took to their surroundings in their home away home from Friday night.
The Warriors rolled up more than 300 yards rushing and handed the Liberty County Panthers a 45-7 thrashing at Donell Woods Stadium/Kirk Warner Field. The game, originally scheduled to be played in Savannah, was moved out of security concerns.
That meant the Panthers were dressed in their road uniforms for a home game. But Jenkins took a comfortable 21-point lead with touchdowns on three straight first-half possessions.
KeMari Wright capped a 13-play, 91-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown run with 1:18 to go in the first quarter. The Warriors needed just three plays on their next possession to go up 14-0 when Domonique Johnson scampered 41 yards for a touchdown, and their next possession lasted just one play – an 80-yard Johnson catch and run on Demetrius Holloway’s pass.
Liberty answered with its best drive of the first half, but Aujshawn Izzard picked off Jaeir Roberts’ pass inside the 10-yard line on the next to last play of the first half.
Ryan Scott’s 2-yard run capped the Warriors’ opening drive of the second half for a 28-0 lead and Joshua Woodley kicked a 35-yard field goal after Brandon Brown blocked a punt.
Roberts ended a 10-play, 80-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run with 16 seconds left in the quarter. But the Warriors answered by turning a potential disaster into a back-breaking break.
Scott picked up Holloway’s dropped snap and raced 73 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the third quarter, giving Jenkins a 38-7 lead.
Torean Wilson’s 40-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter closed the books on the scoring.
Scott led Jenkins’ rushing attack with 184 yards on 15 carries. The Warriors finished with 333 yards on 30 attempts and racked up 432 yards of total offense.
Jenkins’ defense held Elijah Brown to 53 yards on 16 attempts. Noel Best added 46 yards on five carries, and Roberts ran for 37 yards. He was 7-of-22 passing for 66 yards and the Warriors also forced two interceptions. He had a potential 63-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to Kalale Green wiped out by a chop block penalty.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in Region 3-AAA.
