The Liberty County Boys and Girls Club will honor attorney Billy Jones as its humanitarian of the year at its awards gala.
The event is set for Friday, October 10, at the Richmond Hill City Center, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Jones, a 1972 graduate of Mercer Law School, has been a supporter of the local Boys and Girls Club since its inception.
He was recognized in “The Best Lawyers in America” every year from 2010-25 and served as president of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. Jones also has been elected to the American College of Trial Lawyers, which is limited to the top 1 percent of all trial lawyers in the country.
Jones was honored with the Tradition of Excellence from the State Bar of Georgia’s General Practice and Trial Section. Only one such award is granted each year, and recipients must have at least 20 years of outstanding achievement, significant contribution to bar activities, a record of community service and a commitment to excellence.
In 2020, Jones was named Best Lawyers’ Georgia Lawyer of the Year, following a $2.2 million verdict for a client injured on a gambling cruise ship. His client had fallen through an open manhole on a casino ship and was badly injured. However, the statute of limitations had expired on his case when he retained Jones, who nevertheless got the case reinstated, proving his client had been misled by the cruise lines’ insurance adjuster, who had urged the client not to file suit.
Jones has served as president of the Board of Directors of the Coastal Bank, president of the Rotary Club of Hinesville, and chairman of the United Way of Liberty County.
Attire for the event is boots, bowties and gowns.
