Keep Liberty Beautiful: Turn in those tires and help keep Liberty beautiful
Karen Bell
Keep Liberty Beautiful Executive Director Karen Bell.

What do old tires, clean waterways, and a beautiful community have in common? More than you might think. On Saturday, October 24, Keep Liberty Beautiful (KLB) is giving Liberty County residents an opportunity to do something positive for their community through Scrap Tire Amnesty Day and Rivers Alive 2026.

The Scrap Tire Amnesty Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Liberty County Community Complex, 9397 East Oglethorpe Highway, Midway. The event is free for Liberty County residents, but you must provide proof of residency.

Tires can quickly become an eyesore when left along roadsides, behind buildings, in vacant lots, or on private property. They also pose environmental concerns when improperly discarded. Their shape lets them collect rainwater, creating places where mosquitoes can breed, and piles of tires can become difficult and expensive to remove once they accumulate.

That is why events such as Scrap Tire Amnesty Day are important. They give residents a responsible and convenient way to get rid of unwanted tires while helping prevent illegal dumping and keeping tires out of the environment.

When we provide our residents with an opportunity to properly dispose of unwanted tires for free, we are not just removing tires. We are preventing a problem before it starts. Every tire turned in is one less tire that could end up on a roadside, in a ditch, or somewhere it does not belong.

The effort is a natural extension of Keep Liberty Beautiful's mission. KLB is a community education and volunteer action organization dedicated to litter prevention, beautification and community improvement, waste reduction and recycling, stormwater pollution prevention, water conservation education, and creating greater environmental awareness throughout Liberty County.

Proper waste management is an important part of protecting Liberty County's natural resources. What happens on land can eventually affect our creeks, rivers, ponds, and coastal waterways. When litter and improperly discarded materials accumulate, rain can carry pollutants into storm drains and waterways.

That makes October 24 an especially important day for Liberty County.

Along with Scrap Tire Amnesty Day, KLB is encouraging residents and community groups to participate in Rivers Alive 2026, an annual opportunity to help remove litter from local waterways and surrounding areas.

Rivers Alive reminds us that our waterways are connected to everything we do on land. When we pick up litter, properly dispose of waste, and take care of our community, we are also helping protect the water and natural resources that make Liberty County such a special place to live.

Residents and organizations are encouraged to register today for Rivers Alive 2026 on Saturday, October 24. You can register through the Keep Liberty Beautiful website, www.keeplibertybeautiful.org, and Facebook page.

Community cleanups do not have to be limited to October 24. If that date does not work for your group, KLB can work with you to schedule a cleanup on another date. Churches, businesses, civic organizations, schools, neighborhoods, families, and other community groups are all encouraged to get involved.

There is always an opportunity to make a difference.

Whether you have a few unwanted tires sitting behind your home or you are looking for a way for your organization to give back, October 24 provides an opportunity to take action. Turning in tires keeps them out of places where they do not belong, while participating in Rivers Alive helps remove litter and protect local waterways.

Keep Liberty Beautiful believes that a cleaner community begins with individual choices and grows through volunteer action. Something as simple as turning in an old tire or spending a few hours picking up litter can become part of a much greater effort.

On October 24, let's turn in old tires, clean up our waterways, and show what happens when a community works together. There is always an opportunity to make a difference, and it starts with each of us.
